Rain may be to blame

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The rain may be to blame for a partially washed out parking lot in Providence.

The scene is in front of Plainfield Auto Sales on Plainfield Street.

An Eyewitness News crew on scene said part of the parking lot appeared to be washed out, and two cars are in dangers of falling into a hole.

An employee on on scene said a retaining wall collapsed, leading to part of the parking lot collapsing.

Eyewitness News showed the pictures to private engineer Paul Aldinger, who said that appears to be what happened. He said water built up behind a retaining wall and caused the collapse.

The situation could have been caused by Wednesday's rain storm, which dumped at least two inches of rain on the area.

Another one to two inches of rain is expected Thursday.
