PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The president of the Providence chapter of the NAACP is calling for the resignation of the city's police
chief for failing to recruit enough black officers to the department.
Clifford Montiero urged Mayor David Cicilline on Monday to fire Chief Dean Esserman .
He also asked the mayor to appoint a commissioner of public safety and says that person should
be a minority.
Esserman has been under fire this month following the arrests of three officers, including a narcotics detective, in a drug-dealing investigation.
He has said he has no plans to resign.
A spokeswoman for Cicilline, Karen Southern, had no immediate comment.
The phone rang unanswered at Esserman's office on Monday evening.
