PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The head of the Rhode Island Department of Administration and Department of Revenue is stepping down.

Gov. Don Carcieri on Thursday announced that Gary Sasse will leave the jobs on March 1.

Carcieri spokeswoman Amy Kempe says she's not privy to Sasse's plans, but knows he was presented with what she called "great opportunities."

Sasse has led the Department of Revenue since January 2008, and the Department of Administration since January 2009.

Before that, he had retired from a government spending watchdog group, the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council.

He worked there for three decades.

Kempe says Carcieri will name a replacement for Sasse in a matter of days.
