PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Eyewitness News Pinpoint Weather Team recorded the five biggest snowstorms since the devastating blizzard of 1978.
The storms included January 1996, April 1997, February 2003, January 2005 and December 2009.
The blizzard that brought southern New England to its knees, known as the "blizzard of '78", is still the worst since it struck 34 years ago.
Thousands were caught off guard as traffic stopped on I-95 as well as other local roads and highways.
There were roughly one-hundred fatalities in the northeast.
Each of the five more recent storms tracked occurred within the past 16 years, with no occurrences in the 1980s.
While the blizzard of '78 produced 28.6 inches of snowfall, the closest storm was that of January 2005, at 23.4 inches.
Even still, the blizzard of '78 is the one all others are compared to.
