PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP/WPRI) - Rhode Island governor-elect Lincoln Chafee has spoken with outgoing Gov. Don Carcieri and met with the State Police about security as he continues his planning to transition into the governor's office.
Chafee's spokesman Mike Trainor says Chafee spoke with Carcieri at 11 a.m. Thursday. He says Carcieri offered his congratulations for Chafee's victory on Tuesday, and indicated that he and his staff and all department directors would provide all the support they could to the transition.
Chafee also met Thursday with State Police Col. Brendan Doherty and his leadership team. Trainor says a security detail will start inauguration day and will be similar to the one Carcieri has.
Chafee has not yet named a transition team , but Trainor expects that to happen next week.
Eyewitness News has learned President Obama called Chafee to congratulate him on his victory. Chafee backed Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign.
