BOSTON (AP) - Scott Brown could be eligible to be sworn in as Massachusetts' newest U.S. senator as early as Wednesday.
Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin said he plans to present the final voter tally to the Governor's Council at their weekly mid-day meeting Wednesday.
He expects the council to immediately ratify the returns, and he'll then issue a formal certificate of election to the secretary of the U.S. Senate.
Then it's up to Brown and the Senate when to hold the swearing-in. The Republican legislator won a Jan. 19 special
election to succeed the late Edward Kennedy.
Galvin said he was obligated by law to wait 10 days to collect overseas ballots. He sent a letter to the Senate the day after the election saying Brown was the apparent winner, but the Senate requires the formal certificate.
