PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A lobbyist for the National Rifle Association and a captain with the Rhode Island State Police have briefed state lawmakers on firearm policies ahead of what's shaping up to be a significant debate on the issue of gun control.

Wednesday's meeting comes as lawmakers begin to consider legislative responses to the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 first-graders and six educators were killed.

On Tuesday gun control advocates announced legislation that would require firearm owners to register with local police and pay a $100 registration fee.

Several additional proposals are expected soon -- the result of discussions between the state law enforcement, the governor and state lawmakers.
