PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Rhode Island may be the next state to join others across New England in legalizing same-sex marriage.
It is a measure lawmakers have taken up before, but it has yet to pass in the Ocean State. Now, a new bill is on a fast track to a vote by the end of this month. In fact, legislation could be introduced as early as tomorrow.
As lawmakers are looking at the potential to pass the bill, couples are keeping a close eye on the debate. Meanwhile, opponents cite religious beliefs and parenting concerns as reasons to block same-sex couples from exchanging vows.
According to House Speaker Gordon Fox, "Rhode Island must be next in enacting this basic civil right."
