Said he will work to bring jobs to the city

PROVIDENCE - Another candidate threw his hat into the ring for Providence's mayoral race.

Attorney Angel Taveras announced his intentions Thursday morning in front of the Price Rite supermarket in Olneyville where he worked as a teenager. The store is now abandoned.

Taveras, who once served as a housing court judge, promised to bring new jobs to Providence and said he has the leadership to take the city to new heights.

“Even As We Stand Here Today, even as we face significant challenges, I know that the promise of a brighter future for Providence is within our reach,” said Taveras.

Taveras is the latest candidate to declare candidacy since current Mayor David Cicilline announced plans to run for the U.S. Congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Patrick Kennedy.

Other declared mayoral candidates include: Councilman John J. Lombardi and state Rep. Steven M. Costantino, both Democrats; Republican Dr. Daniel Harrop and Christopher Young, currently a Narragansett resident.
