WASHINGTON (WPRI) - Another controversial magazine cover is making the rounds on the internet. This one comes after President Barack Obama announced his public support for same sex marriage.

Newsweek's latest cover hits the stands this week, and it declares President Obama as "the first gay president."

In the magazine photo, President Obama's face is looking skyward with a rainbow halo. The accompanying article analyzes the presidents backing of gay marriage.

Obama said Wednesday he supports gay marriage; reversing his position on a controversial social issue, just six months before the November election.

The president says after years of conversation, he believes that gays and lesbians have the right to marry.

Meanwhile, the presumptive republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, reiterated this weekend that he believes marriage is between a man and a woman.

At least one local politician weighed in on the issue.

"People get that this is about human dignity, and I applaud the president for standing up for human dignity. This is an American value," said Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts.

Newsweek's latest issue will be on stands May 21.
