Steve Nielsen joined the Eyewitness News team in June 2011 as a video journalist. He’s originally from Southern California but has always wanted to live in the New England.
Before the trek to the East Coast, Steve started his professional news career as a morning anchor for KFDX in Wichita Falls, Texas. While reporting there, he covered the 2010 Texas gubernatorial election.
Steve got his start on the sports side of journalism, working for the ESPN affiliate in Phoenix, Ariz. Steve produced shows for all the major Arizona sports teams. His favorite memory there was producing the Super Bowl XLII game between the Giants and Patriots - a game many Rhode Islanders choose to forget.
Steve prepared himself for the world of Rhode Island politics by getting his master's in political science at Midwestern State University in Texas. Before that, he earned his bachelor's in broadcast journalism at Arizona State University. He anchored the school's daily news program, Cronkite NewsWatch.
Outside of news, Steve spent a decade of his life performing Improv comedy and enjoys making people laugh. If you have any story ideas or want to contact Steve, email him at snielsen@wpri.com.
