NEWPORT, RI (WPRI)- - Police in Newport are making preparations for today's big Saint Patrick's Day parade.
The parade draws thousands to Thames Street where people line the parade route to celebrate the Irish holiday. However, residents of Newport and police say that beer cups are beginning to outnumber green hats at the event.
This year the Newport Police Department will be cracking down on the drinking that goes on. Likewise, parade organizers are hoping that this year the parade will be more of a fun family day rather than a day of rowdy drinking.
Newport police also remind parade-goers that what is illegal the other 364 days of the year is still illegal even on St. Patrick's Day.
