NASHUA, N.H. (WPRI) - A Rhode Island man is recovering after crash landing his plane at a New Hampshire airport.

Herman Hassinger was flying from Block Island to Westerly on Tuesday, when he realized his landing gear was stuck.

He then took his plane to Nashua, New Hampshire , where his plane is normally repaired.

It took Hassinger one hour to reach the Nashua airport. The extra miles gave him time to burn through plenty of fuel.

His plane was traveling an estimated 70-75 MPH when its belly touched down on the runway. The plane skidded about 700 feet before coming to a stop.

Hassinger was the only person onboard the Beech Bonanza A36. He was not hurt in the emergency landing.

"The pilot did an excellent job", said Donald Davidson, Chairman of the Nashua Airport Authority.

An initial inspection of the plane showed that a bent rod prevented the left landing gear from locking in the down position.
