(WPRI) - The woman who'd been accused of a hit and run, striking a Brown University graduate now on life support, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon, but soon after released.
According to WCBS-TV, Cindy Jasmin, 31, turned herself in to police Tuesday afternoon. She was then released shortly before 6:00 p.m., with no criminal charges filed against her. Jasmin told police she was not the person behind the wheel when the hit and run occurred.
It's now believed the person who hit 22-year-old Erinn Phelan early Sunday morning is still at large.
Doctors say a severe brain injury in the collision has rendered Phelan brain dead.
Alma Guerrero had been with Phelan at the time of the impact -- they were roommates at Brown. Guerrero's family says Phelan pushed her out of the way of the car, saving her life. Guerrero is expected to make a full recovery.
Phelan was just recently hired to help coordinate Mayor Michael Bloomberg's volunteer program.
