Pundit has some harsh words for Newt Gingrich

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Chris Matthews was in town selling his new book, but took some time out to discuss the Republican race for president on Newsmakers.

The political insider, and MSNBC host was particularly harsh on Newt Gingrich, and the thought of the former Speaker of the House being the GOP's nominee.

“I think it’s grotesque,” Matthews said. “The way he came to power was basically assassinating people’s character, calling people corrupt. Everyone was corrupt... anyone on the opposite side of the offering was corrupt, and the democratic party is made up of traders."

Despite what Matthews sees as a weak Republican field, he says President Obama isn't guaranteed a second term.

“He’s a leader of the democratic party. He’s a leader of a political party. He doesn’t act it," Matthews said. "He acts like he’s above politics, like he has no political allies, and he doesn’t.”

The Iowa Caucuses will be held on January 3rd.
