FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) - Fall River police have identified the two men killed early Thursday morning after the car they were riding in smashed into multiple poles and a fence.
It happened at 976 Robeson Street in Fall River just after 2 a.m. Eyewitness News learned the two men were out celebrating one of their birthdays.
According to police, a 2007 Chrysler Sebring driven by Dominick Shaw, 25, of Freetown, struck and broke both a utility pole and traffic light pole. They said the vehicle then continued south on Robeson Street and plowed into a fence, coming to rest in the front yard of a home.
“I heard this loud break, it must have lasted for an eternity. It woke me up out of a sound sleep,” said Tony Carreira.
When police arrived, both Shaw and his passenger, Kevin Amaral, 27, of Fall River, were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Kids must have been doing about 70, 75 miles per hour. They got a skid mark over 200 feet,” explained Carreira.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this time, but speed most definitely does, police said.
“I’ve been living here for almost 40 years and I’ve seen a lot of accidents here. This is the worst corner for accidents,” continued Carreira. “This is the worst I’ve seen.”
The accident is currently under investigation.
Meanwhile, workers continue to repair the damaged poles on Robeson Street.
