SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) - We're used to cell phones, WiFi networks and more for communications these days.
Recent natural disasters have proven those networks can go down, but local ham radio operators say they are ready to fill in.
Several amateur radio enthusiasts held a drill in Swansea Sunday.
They put up temporary radio towers, and took shifts communicating across the area.
It was all good practice in the event local cell towers or other communications are blown out.
Ham radio operators came to the rescue during the recent tornadoes in Massachusetts , and also during Hurricane Katrina.
