BOSTON (AP/WPRI) - Former state treasurer and one-time gubernatorial candidate Timothy Cahill has been indicted on public corruption charges.
A person familiar with the indictments returned Monday by a Suffolk County grand jury tells The Associated Press Cahill faces charges of procurement fraud and conspiracy to commit violations of state ethics laws.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the indictments have not been formally announced. The charges stem from lottery ads aired during Cahill's unsuccessful independent campaign for governor in 2010. No further details were available.
“These indictments detail fundamental and outrageous violations of the public trust, as well as gross abuse of public office, said Treasurer Steven Grossman.
He continued, "We have cooperated fully with this investigation and will continue to do so. From day one, we have implemented long overdue reforms at Treasury to make it more transparent, professional and accountable to all citizens of the Commonwealth.”
The state attorney general's office is expected to release more information at a news conference later Monday. Cahill served as treasurer as a Democrat for two terms. A message has been left with his attorney.
