NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) - After searching for more than an hour, crews pulled a fisherman's body from the icy waters off of New Bedford Friday morning.
Crews were called to the area of Eastern Fisheries on Hassey Street around 7:30 a.m. for reports of a man trapped under the ice. The victim has been identified by authorities as Captain Joe Cracchiolo, 47, of Gloucester, Mass.
By 9 a.m. divers had located Cracchiolo and were waiting for the medical examiner to arrive on scene before recovering his body from the icy water.
According to Lt. Jeffrey P. Silva, three fishermen were out overnight and one fell overboard. Officials say the fall was captured on surveillance video.
However, the other two men did not realize the victim was missing until this morning.
Silva said the incident appears to be an accident and no foul play is expected.
Police will not release the victim's name until his family is notified, nor have they identified the boat involved.
