NEW BEDFORD, MASS. (WPRI - Members of the scallop industry have two more weeks to weigh in on new proposed fishing regulations.
According to the New Bedford Standard-Times , the National Marine Fisheries Service is asking the public to comment on the proposal no later than January 18th.
At the heart of the plan - protecting sea turtles, which are sometimes caught in scallop-fishing gear. New modifications to dredging equipment are intended to minimize the risk.
If approved the new regulations would go into effect in 2013.
