NEW BEDFORD, MASS. (WPRI) -- New Bedford Police are looking for a department-issued weapon that has been stolen.

Police Chief David Provencher confirmed to Eyewitness News that a loaded AR-15 style assault rifle was recently stolen from the trunk of an unmarked police cruiser.

Provencher told the New Bedford Standard-Times that he learned of the incident Wendesday morning.

"There is no higher priority to us than the location and recovery of this stolen firearm," Provencher wrote in an email to Eyewitness News, calling the theft "a serious and significant threat to the safety of our community."

The police departments in nearby cities and towns have been informed of the theft of the weapon and Provencher said he will be coordinating with state and federal law enforcement agencies as well in trying to identify and locate those responsible for the theft.

"Those responsible should be aware we are coming for them and it is in their best interests to return the weapon."
