NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) - A fire at a New Bedford elementary school Thursday has forced officials to cancel summer school for at least a week.
According to the Pinpoint Closing Network , summer classes at William H. Carney Memorial Academy are canceled July 23 to July 27.
Crews were called to the Elm St. building Thursday at 5:20 a.m. When they arrived, smoke and fire were coming out of the first-floor windows.
Police tell Eyewitness News that the fire was electrical in nature. Investigators also say the school does have a sprinkler system inside the building, despite previous reports there were no sprinklers in the building.
Officials said they were only alerted about the fire after the building's burglar alarm went off.
