DOVER A.F.B. (WPRI) - The body of fallen North Attleboro Marine Capt. Kyle Van De Giesen returned to the U.S. on Thursday, along with those of 17 colleagues who were killed in Afghanistan this week.

President Barack Obama made a surprise trip to Dover Air Force Base, to salute the fallen heroes, and to visit privately with their families.

Capt. Van De Giesen was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Monday.  He leaves behind a pregnant wife, an 18-month-old daughter, his parents, two brothers and a sister.

He graduated North Attleboro High School in 1998, and St. Anselm College in 2002.
