NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) - A grand jury is now investigating the brutal beating of a North Attleboro woman.

60-year-old Lawrence Poirier is charged with trying to kill his girlfriend, 65-year-old Carol Smith, at her apartment last month.

Now prosecutors want the charges upgraded to the Superior Court level, which is why they are seeking a grand jury indictment.

Poirier pleaded not guilty to felony charges in Attleboro District Court.

If the grand jury hands down an indictment, he would be re-arraigned in New Bedford Superior Court, accoring to a report in the Attleboro Sun-Chronicle.

The victim, Carol Smith, was in intensive care at Rhode Island Hospital for several days with serious head injuries following the attack.

Poirier has no prior criminal record, according to his attorney.
