Man sentenced for New Bedford shooting

NEW BEDFORD, Mass., (WPRI) - A New Bedford man has been sentenced to serve eight to 10 years behind bars for shooting another man back in June 2010.

Police say Jared DeBarros, 19, was convicted on Friday of armed assault with intent to murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

DeBarros will also serve three years of supervised release and was ordered to have no contact with the victim or witnesses in the case.

Investigators say DeBarros shot another man in the back during an argument at the intersection of Allen and Dartmouth Streets on June 29, 2010.

"While I am deeply saddened by the senseless nature of this incident and the permanent damage the victim has suffered, I am pleased that the judge's sentence for this defendant was close to the recommendation we made," said District Attorney Sam Sutter.

He continued, "We need to continue to send the message to criminals with illegal guns that they will be prosecuted with severity when they are apprehended."
