Fire investigated at elementary school

Smoke, fire seen coming out of first floor windows

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) - Firefighters in New Bedford responded to a fire inside an elementary school early Thursday morning.

It happened around 5:20 a.m. at Sgt. William H. Carney Memorial Academy on Elm Street.

According to fire officials, the doors were locked when they arrived and fire and smoke was seen coming out of the first floor windows.

No one was inside at the time. The cause is under investigation.

Meanwhile, due to the fire, the Carney Academy Summer Program will be closed Thursday.
