BOSTON, Mass. (WPRI) - Marylou's Coffee is being investigated by the federal government.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is looking into claims the company hires attractive young female workers.

"I do know that there are cute girls that work at the ones I've been to. I've only been to a couple, but I know it's a signature thing they do," said customer Jacob Garcia.

The EEOC has been reviewing Marylou's job applications and interviewing company officials about it's hiring practices.

Other customers who spoke to Eyewitness News said "I just think that's a little ridiculous, honestly."

Another said, "I don't see what the big deal is."

The Boston-based company is known for its hiring of younger women, who can be seen wearing pink t-shirts, black shorts, and singing and dancing in their television commercials.

In a statement to Eyewitness News, a spokesperson for Marylou's said in part:

"The implication in this report is absolutely false.  We hire only the most qualified applicants...and those qualifications begin and end with a winning personality and a passion for customer service."

Marylou's operates 6 locations in Rhode Island, including East Greenwich, East Providence, Smithfield, Johnston, Scituate, and North Providence.
