NEW BEDFORD, Mass., (WPRI) - Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter is calling the suicide of a 12-year-old boy in New Bedford an unfathomable tragedy.

The DA's office held a news conference on Wednesday afternoon addressing the situation.

Officials say the boy was a student at Roosevelt Middle School, where the flags now stand at half staff.

Sutter said the 6th grade boy was suspended on Tuesday and went home after he got into a fight at school.

State leaders including the city's mayor went to the school to speak with grieving students Wednesday.

The boy is the second young person to take his own life in less than a year in New Bedford.

Eyewitness News has decided not to identify the boy out of respect for his family.
