DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WPRI) -- A judge has ordered a Dartmouth man, accused of running over a child while driving drunk, held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing next week.

During his arraignment at New Bedford District Court Thursday, Pedro Roias, 64, pleaded not guilty to charges of operating under the influence and causing serious bodily injury.

Dartmouth police were called to Buttonwood Rd. Wednesday around 3 p.m. after they said Roias crashed his minivan while backing out of his driveway.

The van slammed through a fence, located across the street from Roias' home, and hit a 4-year-old who was playing in his yard at the time.

Police said Roias was visibly drunk when they arrived on the scene.

The boy was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence for treatment. As of Thursday afternoon, he had been released and was recovering from his injuries at home.

Roias' dangerousness hearing is set for next Tuesday.
