NEW BEDFORD, Mass., (WPRI) - A 4-year-old New Bedford boy was beaten so badly, that a hospital nurse was brought to tears at the mere sight of the child's injuries.

Police have arrested and charged the boy's mother's boyfriend with the crime.

The District Attorney's office has confirmed that Elvis Garcia, 31, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

According to officials, the victim had bruising and cuts all over his body and dried blood in his ear.

"In my 16 years, this has got to be the most heinous crime I've ever seen on a living child," Detective Alberto B. Silva told the New Bedford Times.

The boy's mother, Sandra Augusto, 33, was also arrested and charged with permitting substantial injury to a child, and reckless endangerment to a child under 18.

Augusto is accused of allowing the abuse to happen.
