ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) - A raging brush fire on city property kept firefighters from Attleboro and surrounding communities busy for hours Sunday night.
The flames began just after 5 p.m. Sunday behind a city water treatment plant. The site is a city storage yard that holds storm debris, and the debris is routinely burned during the week to destroy it.
Strong winds ignited some of the material and fire officials said that flare up was a result of a controlled burn from Friday.
The fire wasn't easy to extinguish. The Bristol County tanker task force was activated to assist Attleboro crews because a hydrant at the location was frozen. Officials say about 1,400 feet of hose was laid to help bring in water.
Progress was described as "slow but steady;" the main concern was that the heavy smoke stayed very low to the ground and was spreading to nearby neighborhoods.
