Tiverton, R.I. (WPRI) - The Sakonnet River Bridge is set to get a new name.
The Tiverton Town Council has agreed to change the name of the bridge after Staff Sergeant Christopher Potts.
He died while fighting overseas in Iraq back in 2004.
The existing span carries route 24 from Tiverton to Portsmouth.
The bridge was built in 1957 and is in desperate need of repairs.
Cardi Corporation has won the construction contract to repair the bridge.
The Department of Transportation wants the project to be complete by 2012.
If Cardi finishes the project early, it could earn a $5 million dollar bonus.
