PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) - A homeless “tent city” in Providence ran into more trouble after officials told them to move. The squatters relocated to a new spot, but were forced to move back to the original site because they set up their camp on private property.
Providence’s tent city, known as "Camp Runamuck" is located under an old Interstate 195 bridge by South Water Street. State officials have given the residents a deadline of August 3rd to move.
The group did move to Collier Point Park on Allens Avenue, but they settled on land owned by Dominion Electric.
Once Providence police learned that the group was on private property, they again ordered them to leave. The tent city was then moved back to its original spot under the bridge. The bridge is scheduled to be torn down next year as part of the iWay project.
Leaders of the group are actively scouting new locations for the
tent city.
