PROVIDENCE, R.I (WPRI) - Local Democrats are voting to endorse the new Senate president. Joseph Montalbano held that seat since 2004 but he was ousted from the position last Tuesday.

Democrat Teresa Paiva-Weed, from Newport is now on the fast track to become the state's first female Senate president. Monday evening, the Democratic caucus convened to nominate her to the top position.

They elected a new Senate majority leader, Daniel Connors. Both Connors and Paiva-Weed focused on the importance of focusing on the Rhode Island economy when they convene with new leadership.

"It's going to take hard work, compromise, strong, sensible ideas, and a steadfast commitment to turn the tides," says Sen. Connors.

The caucus actually does not have the power or authority to officially elect the president that will happen with a full vote of the Senate when the legislature reconvenes in January.
