RI Gov to announce state shutdown days

Needs to trim $68M from state budget

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Gov. Don Carcieri will announce a plan to shut down state government to balance Rhode Island's sagging budget.

The Republican governor will release details of his plan at a news conference set for Monday afternoon. It will include several government shutdown days.

Lawmakers in the Democratic-dominated General Assembly passed a $7.8 billion state budget in June that forced Carcieri to trim about $68 million in personnel and operating expenses. The spending
plan did not specify where the bulk of the savings would come from.

Besides shutdown days, Carcieri wants permission to withhold state spending already approved in the budget. Lawmakers balked at a similar request earlier this year.

WPRI.com plans to stream live the Carcieri's 3 p.m. news conference.
