PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Robert Corrente, the former federal prosecutor who made a name in fighting political corruption in Rhode Island, met this morning with members of the newly formed Moderate party for a potential run for governor.
Christine Hunsinger, the party’s new executive director says the former U.S. Attorney met over coffee and donuts at the party’s headquarters at 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
Hunsinger tells Eyewitness News the party is in talks with “more than six people” for a potential bid for governor.
“[Corrente] is strong on the issue of ethics,” Hunsinger said. “We need to make sure the person we choose is the right person.”
Corrente, of East Greenwich, is currently registered as a Republican, though Hunsinger referred to him as a “recovering Republican.”

Calls to Corrente’s office at law giant Burns and Levinson have not been returned.
Corrente was the U.S. Attorney in Providence from 2004 to 2009. He spearheaded a campaign to clean-up corruption on Smith Hill dubbed “Operation Dollar Bill.”
Hunsinger would not say when the Moderate party would choose a candidate. Its board will vote on who will represent the party in the 2010 race. Currently the board has seven members, including Chairman Ken Block, the party’s founder and former Attorney General Arlene Violet. Hunsinger said they would be adding another member soon.
The Moderate party’s platform is what they call the
“Four E’s.” The Economy, Ethics, Environment and
Education.
