PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Looking for a good paying job? Providence is trying to lure in more police and fire recruits and they have a unique way to fill those positions.
Mayor David Cicilline, Police Chief Dean Esserman and Fire Chief George Farrell are proposing an ordinance that's designed to beef up public safety in the capital city.
The ordinance would assign ten additional points to police and fire recruits who have passed all entrance exams and meet the required standards for joining either department.
The ordinance would also give additional tools to enhance public safety by making sure police and firefighters are familiar with the neighborhoods they have pledged to protect.
Both the mayor and Chief Esserman believe the proposed ordinance will help strengthen the police department’s community policing program which has become a national model in law enforcement.
Mayor Cicilline has forwarded the proposal to the city council for consideration.
