Says free fishing is Rhode Islanders' birthright

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Governor Don Carcieri has vetoed a bill that would require Rhode Islanders to purchase a $7 license for recreational saltwater fishing.

The leigslation was approved by the General Assembly during a special session last week.

In his veto message, the governor calls saltwater fishing a "birthright" for Rhode Islanders.

The state already requires an $18 license fee for freshwater fishing.

Democrats hold enough votes to override the veto, but it's unclear whether lawmakers will do so.
