PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - It's been in the works for years, the South Coast Commuter Rail Project. Tuesday, the House Finance Committee discussed cutting some of the funds for the project, claiming it will cost too much money and it will cause the state's $357 million dollar deficit to expand.
Improvements to infrastructure and modes of transportation were topics of discussion at the meeting.
The plan is to extend commuter rail service from Providence to Wickford Junction.
MBTA would operate the trains which would run on amtrak lines.
But the Ocean State would still have to purchase 200 million dollars in insurance.
Proponents argue the benefits outway the cost, the rail line they say would provide a quick and affordable travel option, they also anticipate some 3,600 additional travelers a day.
The DOT plans to begin several projects as soon as the federal stimulus money comes in.
If all goes as planned, the South Coast Commuter Rail could be complete by 2011.
