PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence police have identified the man arrested in connection with the murder of a Providence woman.
An arrest warrant was issued Monday for Travis Garcia, 18, in connection to the murder of Jeannine Garcia, 32, police confirmed.
There is no family relation between the victim and the suspect.
Providence police found Jeannine Garcia's body inside her apartment Sunday morning during a well-being check.
"To be honest with you, all week that I watch the news and I see a murder or a car accident I have thought about my daughter. All week I had been thinking that something was going to happen to my daughter. I don't know why. I don't know if it's a mother's instinct or if it's a mother feeling scared about something," said Margaret Haury, victim's mother.
The victim's sister, Rebecca Haury said, "She didn't deserve what happened to her. She loved animals. She loved going to the movies."
According to Capt. James F. Desmarais, officers checked on Garcia after learning police in Clinton, Connecticut arrested Travis Garcia. Police there said he led them on a chase while driving a car registered to the victim.
Haury told Eyewitness News Tuesday that she believes Travis Garcia killed her daughter, because she refused his advances.
"He was very persistent. He wanted her to be his girlfriend and only his girlfriend," Haury said. "She turned him down. She didn't want to go out with him, she just wanted to be friends with him."
Providence police will be working with the Attorney General's Office to work on Travis Garcia's extradition from Connecticut, Desmarais said.
In the meantime, the management of Cathedral Square apartments plans to talk with residents about security concerns that arose following this weekend's murder.
After the crime was discovered, neighbors questioned the security in the building. One resident even said security monitors were broken for four weeks.
At this time, police are not saying how Garcia died.
