PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A Pawtucket man is charged with molesting a 4-month-old baby girl, after staff at Hasbro Children's Hospital treated the infant and alerted authorities. 19-year-old Emanuel Baptista is now under arrest.
The baby was admitted to Hasbro Thursday with several injuries. Investigators close to the case said the baby had several broken ribs and a broken arm.
While examining her, medical staff found reason to believe the baby was the victim of child molestation, according to a Pawtucket police news release.
Police detectives rushed to Hasbro to investigate. Their investigation led to the arrest of Baptista -- who is a relative of the victim -- and criminal charges of two counts of first-degree child molestation and two counts of child abuse.
Family members of the infant said they were extremely shaken up at the allegations.
The Department of Children, Youth and Families has taken custody of the infant, who is still admitted to the hospital. She is expected to recover from her injuries.
