NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - A grand jury investigating a police-involved shooting in which a North Kingstown teenager and a police officer were injured has cleared the officers of any wrong doing, according to the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office.

After two-month long investigation wrapped up Wednesday, the panel returned no charges against North Kingstown Officers Dan Silva, John Urban and Kevin Gleason.

Officers responded to the home of Mark Kilcline, 19, for a well-being check on Feb. 8 around 9 a.m., after receiving reports he had injured himself with a knife earlier in the morning. Shortly after, the incident escalated when officers said Kilcline pulled an eight-inch steak knife on them.

According to police accounts, Silva ordered Kilcline to drop his weapon. When he did not, officers said Silva used his stun gun on Kilcline, to no effect.

When Kilcline continued to charge at Silva, police said Urban and Gleason fired a total of 10 shots at Kilcline. The suspect suffered serious injuries from the shooting. Officer Silva was also shot by Urban's gun, police said.

“Mark Kilcline’s injury is tragic, but, as the grand jury found, the responding officers, in their instant of action, acted reasonably and professionally. I would add that they probably prevented a worse tragedy from occurring,” said Attorney General Patrick Lynch.

The grand jury was not asked to consider possible charges against Kilcline.
