A new state report says the long-promised commuter rail project linking New Bedford and Fall River to Boston would create up to 3,800 permanent jobs by the year 2030 and generate nearly $500 million in economic activity.
Gov. Deval Patrick revealed the results of the report during a news conference at the New Bedford Whaling Museum Wednesday morning. In light of the findings, Patrick said his administration is forging ahead with plans for the proposed $1.4 billion project.
Building the rail line and the estimated 11 train stations along the new route also is expected to create up to 8,000 construction jobs.
Patrick said the rail project will help curb suburban sprawl and revitalize the SouthCoast economy.
The project has come under fire from Treasurer Timothy Cahill , a possible challenger to Patrick next year. Cahill said the state can't afford a major new transportation project.
