JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Authorities are investigating after an SUV rolls over on Route 295 South in Johnston.

The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. between Exits 5 and 6, just south of the Route 6 on-ramp. An SUV, carrying three adults and three children, overturned on the highway.

Two adults were ejected in the crash, and were unconscious when police arrived, according to state police. Officials say now believe a third adult could have been ejected as well.

All the adults are female and are suffering from critical injuries The adults involved in the crash were taken to Rhode Island Hospital. The children were rushed to Hasbro Children's Hospital. The children are all about one-year-old. Their conditions are unknown.

Police say they believe speed may have been a factor in the crash.

"It's still a preliminary investigation but we believe speed was a factor," said State Police Lt. Joseph Delprete.

The accident tied up rush hour traffic. The victim's identities have not been released.
