JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - State Police Wednesday identified the two women killed in a violent rollover crash on Route 295 in Johnston Tuesday afternoon.

The driver, Shiela A. Armstrong, 23, of Pawtucket and her passenger, Kayla R. Pine, 21, of West Warwick were both pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital, according to police.

A third woman, Claire L. Narvaez, 23, of Pawtucket is listed in critical condition.

Police said all three women were ejected when the SUV they were in rolled over on the interstate, just south of Exit 6.

Three children in the vehicle, ages 2, 1, and 8 months, were all strapped in car seats at the time of the crash. They were treated and released at Rhode Island Hospital for minor injuries, police said.

No word on their relationship to the women.

The Accident

According to State Police, Armstrong was driving the black SUV south on the 295 access road, when she tried to pass a vehicle on the left. Armstrong then lost control of the vehicle, which then skidded from the left lane all the way into the right lane, and into the grassy shoulder.

Police said the vehicle then entered a spin and rolled over, at which time the three adults inside were ejected.

Investigators have said they believe speed played a role in the deadly crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
