EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Local veterinarians say that an American Bulldog Pit-bull mix found on the highway in East Providence badly beaten and severely burned is holding up considerably well.

The 5 year-old dog named Yugo, by the vet staff was picked up by a woman who was driving in the area on Tuesday. The woman took him to the animal shelter on Commercial Way.

Vet officials say they have received over 100 calls, and nearly $1,000 dollars in donations to help in Yugo's recovery.

Officials say the animal had severe burns on his leg, one injury was infected he has a bite wound and injuries around his ears.

Veterinarians say because his wounds were so severe they thought they might have to put him down.

However, because the mix breed dog was wagging his tail and seemed to be in good spirits, vets decided to save him and treat his injuries.

Police are investigating this cruel case of animal cruelty and will press criminal charges against the person responsible. Yugo continues to recover at the East Bay Animal Hospital in Seekonk.

If you would like to donate in order to help in Yugo's recovery you can contact the East Bay Animal Hospital in Seekonk, Massachusetts at 1-508-336-3434.
