An American Bulldog Pit-bull mix was found wandering on a highway in East Providence.

A woman who was driving in the area on Tuesday discovered the dog and took him to the animal shelter on Commercial Way.

The animal had severe burns on his leg, one injury was infected he has a bite wound and injuries around his ears. Veterinarians say because his wounds were so severe they thought they might have to put him down.

However, because the mix breed dog was wagging his tail and seemed to be in good spirits, vets decided to save him and treat his injuries

The dog is approximately 5-years-old. The vet staff named him Hugo, he is recovering at the East Bay Animal Hospital in Seekonk.

Police are investigating this cruel case of animal cruelty and will press criminal charges against the person responsible.
