CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WPRI) - Approximately 400 homes in Cumberland will be without water for the next couple of hours after a major water main break on Marshall Ave.

Crews from the Cumberland Water Department are working to repair the break that has also shut down parts of the road Thursday morning, from Garden St. to Mendon Rd.

The water main broke shortly before 8 a.m., creating a massive sink hole in the middle of the road.

Officials said they cannot determine when it will be reopened to traffic.  They said they are currently assessing damage caused by water pressure and are determining how much of the pipe needs repair.
