(WPRI) - In observation of the arrival of explorer Christopher Columbus in the Americas, many establishments and government offices are closed or changing hours for Columbus Day Monday.

Last Spring, Brown University garned some controversy when it bowed to student petitions and chose to change the name of the Columbus Day holiday to Fall Weekend, in view of how Native Americans were treated after Columbus's arrival. Many Rhode Island natives, proud of their Italian heritage, including Providence Mayor David Cicilline, challenged the decision.
