PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Deepwater Wind, an offshore wind power development company, opened an office in Providence on Monday.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the office at 56 Exchange Terrace in the capital city Monday afternoon. Governor Donald Carcieri (R-RI) and Mayor David Cicilline (D-Providence) were on hand for the ceremony.
"Everybody is working together to get this thing going because it means lots of jobs, and they are all going to be new jobs for Rhode Islanders," say Governor Carcieri.
In September of 2008, state officials selected Deepwater Wind to build a 100-turbine wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island. Officials hope the project will eventually generate 15 percent of the state's electricity.
Deepwater has committed to basing its corporate manufacturing headquarters at Quonset Point, where it expects to hire about 800 people over the next few years.
